Let’s Talk Props: What to Bring for a Brand Shoot That Works

From someone who won’t let you show up with a random mug and a dream.

You booked the session. You picked the outfits. You even managed to narrow down your Pinterest board to a level that doesn’t cause eye twitching.

Now we need to talk about props.
Not in a “grab whatever’s nearby” kind of way, but in a way that supports your brand, tells your story, and gives your images depth, context, and life.

Spoiler: You don’t need to show up with a suitcase full of random objects.
You just need a few intentional pieces that actually make sense for what you do.

    Why Props Matter

Props aren’t there to “fill space” in your photos. They:

    • Add personality and brand texture
    • Create scenes that feel lived-in and real
    • Give your hands something to do (goodbye awkward arms!)
    • Help you tell the story of your work, without needing a caption to explain it

The goal isn’t to stage a full magazine spread. The goal is to bring your visual brand to life with pieces that feel like you.

    Start With Function

Here’s your permission slip: if it’s part of your everyday work, it counts. Period.

    Think:

    • Laptop or tablet
    • Phone
    • Product samples
    • Tools of your trade (notebooks, brushes, candles, stethoscopes, color swatches, etc.
    • Packaging elements
    • Branded swag (mugs, t-shirts, signage, stickers, etc.)

If you use it to do the thing you do? It’s fair game. Bonus points if it looks good in a photo.

    Then Add Vibe

This is where we get to layer in your brand’s feeling. Props that support your mood or aesthetic without trying too hard.

    Try:

    • A favorite coffee mug or wine glass (that you actually use)
    • A well-loved journal or planner (and that only pen you will ever use)
    • Books that inspire your work or your audience
    • Natural elements: florals, fruit, branches, herbs, etc.
    • Personal touches: a signature necklace, funky glasses, bold lipstick, that one bag that says “I own this room”

Think less “random cute thing from Target,” more “this belongs in my life and it looks damn good while it’s here.”

Don’t Worry, We Plan This Together

Props shouldn’t be guesswork, and you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

After our strategy call and shared moodboard (yes, we’ll make one), I’ll start to get a clear sense of your vibe, your audience, and the story we’re telling.
That’s when I create your shot list, and guess what?
I include suggested props that support the vision we’ve built.

You won’t need to stand in your closet or office wondering what counts as “on brand.”
You’ll have a plan. And items you bring will have a reason to be there.

    Props to Skip

    • Anything you bought just because it’s cute but have no connection to
    • Stuff with visible logos (unless it’s your logo)
    • Unread books with meaningless titles
    • Props that feel trendy but don’t align with your actual brand energy

Just because it works on Pinterest doesn’t mean it’ll work for you.
We’re not copying someone else’s aesthetic. We’re building yours.

    Brand-First Props, Always

Don’t stress over curating the perfect flat lay collection. You’re not expected to bring props that belong in a showroom. Just bring what helps us tell your story.

Not sure what to pack? You can always send me photos or bring a few options.
I’ll help you narrow it down and weave them into your session with intention.

Need help curating the perfect set of props?
That’s part of what we plan together, because every detail counts, and your brand deserves more than guesswork.
